Vena cava filters in surgery and trauma.

چکیده
Vena cava filters are widely used to prevent pulmonary embolic events in patients who have known venous thromboses, or in select patients deemed to be at high risk for these events. There are few prospective or well-controlled data regarding the efficacy and appropriate indications for vena cava filter use in surgical patients. High-risk surgical patients such as those who have multiple injuries, malignancy, and those undergoing bariatric procedures may benefit from vena cava filter placement. The authors discuss the available data regarding indications, efficacy, and outcomes to assist the surgeon in deciding when to use this technology.

Inferior vena cava filters: Some evidence from the past and a look to the future.
Venous thromboembolism is a national health concern. Up to 58% of patients suffering from major multisystem trauma will experience venous thromboembolism if no measures are taken to prevent it. Of those, 10% to 30% will be fatal. The appropriate use of lower extremity compression, anticoagulation, and the use of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters has helped reduce the overall morbidity and mortal...

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using carbon dioxide (CO(2)) as a contrast agent in performing bedside inferior vena cavagrams before the insertion of vena cava filters. There was a consecutive series of patients undergoing bedside preinsertion cavagrams with inferior vena cava filter insertion. The setting was an 825-bed tertiary care hospital. The subj...
